What If?!? Monday Mock Draft 2/15/2010
by Cecil Lammey on 02/15/10What if the Broncos trade away Brandon Marshall to the Ravens? What if the Bills trade Marshawn Lynch to the Chargers? Check back every Monday leading up to the draft for my new “What If!?!” mock draft!
1. St. Louis - Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska - The Rams get it right, and sign Suh to a contract before the draft even begins. They are hopeful he’ll be the anchor of their defense for years to come.
2. Detroit - Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma State - Jim Schwartz really was hoping for Suh to fall just one spot, but gets a great consolation prize in McCoy. There are some in the NFL that believe McCoy is the better prospect because of his upside.
3. Tampa Bay - Eric Berry, CB/FS, Tennessee - Tampa gets exactly who they wanted, and Berry can help the Buccaneers in a number of different ways. He’s versatile enough to play CB or FS, and can also be used effectively as a return man.
4. Washington - Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma - Mike Shanahan wants a young QB to develop, and Bradford fits exactly what he wants. He’s a tall, efficient, and accurate quarterback that can run the bootleg effectively.
5. Kansas City - Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State - The Chiefs know that protecting Matt Cassel is priority number one. They would have selected Berry if he was available, but are very happy to get Okung and will plug him in on the offensive line immediately.
6. Seattle - Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa - With Walter Jones retiring the Seahawks have a huge need on the left side of their offensive line. Bulaga will be asked to step into the starting lineup from day one.
7. Cleveland - C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson - Last year the Browns selected former Clemson RB James Davis in the sixth-round, and now they re-unite him with C.J. Spiller. Many in the scouting community are comparing Spiller to Titans RB Chris Johnson, and Mike Holmgren wanted to add a big time playmaker to an offense that needs more big plays.
8. Oakland - Everson Griffen, DE, USC - Griffen wows scouts with his elite athleticism at the Scouting Combine, and Al Davis takes note. He gets to stay in California, and learn behind veteran Richard Seymour.
9. Buffalo - Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame - The Bills have many needs, but perhaps none greater than at quarterback. New head coach Chan Gailey will work with Clausen to improve his mechanics, but loves the young gunslingers grit and determination. By trading away Marshawn Lynch they are able to add a couple of mid-round picks and are moving to a more wide open passing offense.
10. Denver (from Chicago) - Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State - With Brandon Marshall in Baltimore the Broncos need to add a playmaker to their WR corps. Dez Bryant is by far the best wide receiver in this draft class, and should develop into one of the best receivers in the league.
11. Jacksonville - Derrick Morgan, DE/OLB, Georgia Tech - The Jags want to wait on Tim Tebow until later in the draft, and have a serious need to get more sacks after having a league-low 14 sacks in 2009. Morgan will help them get more pressure on the quarterback, which will in turn help their secondary in coverage.
12. Dolphins - Jason Pierre-Paul, OLB, South Florida - Joey Porter is gone, and Jason Taylor is no spring chicken. Pierre-Paul gets to stay in Florida, and the ‘Fins love his explosive playmaking capability.
13. San Francisco - Joe Haden, CB, Florida - The 49ers are looking to upgrade their secondary, and Haden fits the bill. He is a great athlete with good speed and strength to take on bigger receivers. Mike Singletary loves that Haden is a sound and aggressive tackler.
14. Seattle (from Denver) - Taylor Mays, FS, USC - Pete Carroll gets one of his former players in the first-round. He knows exactly what kind of impact to expect from Mays, and gets the enforcer in the deep secondary that he coveted.
15. New York Giants - Rolando McClain, ILB, Alabama - Antonio Pierce has been released and the Giants get a serious playmaker in McClain. He’s athletic enough to play on the outside if needed, and can consistently scrape and flow to the point of the play.
16. San Francisco (from Carolina) - Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma - Having added to their secondary with their first, first-round pick the 49ers now focus their attention to the offensive line. Williams is the best run blocking tackle in this draft, and should greatly help Frank Gore and the Niners ground game.
17. Tennessee - Ricky Sapp, DE/OLB, Clemson - Kyle Vanden Bosch is not retiring, but his skill set is diminishing. Sapp spent most of his career with his hand in the dirt, but last season showed he could be a force as an OLB in coverage because of his elite athleticism.
18. Pittsburgh - Mike Iupati, OG/OT, Idaho - The Steelers need to do a better job of protecting Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and Iupati can play either guard or tackle. Iupati should also help the run game be more dominant, especially in short yardage situations.
19. Atlanta - Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida - Former number eight overall pick Jamaal Anderson has not lived up to his potential. The Falcons need to add a consistent force opposite sack-master John Abraham.
20. Houston - Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee - The Texans need to push the pocket from the middle and create pressure for opposing quarterbacks. Williams should help the defense do both of those things with his size, strength, and tireless motor.
21. Cincinnati - Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma - The Bengals have not used their tight ends much in recent years, but have been trying to upgrade the position for some time now. Gresham plays like a “super sized” wide receiver and is yet another playmaker for Carson Palmer and the passing game.
22. New England - Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida - The Patriots have a need to fill with their inside linebackers, and Junior Seau is no longer an option. Spikes is an aggressive head hunter that will bring more attitude to the Pats defense.
23. Green Bay - Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers - The Packers are looking to protect quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and are thrilled when Davis falls in their lap.
24. Philadelphia - Earl Thomas, FS, Texas - The Eagles were not overly impressed by Macho Harris during his rookie season, and are looking for depth and playmaking ability—Thomas gives them both.
25. Denver (from Baltimore for Brandon Marshall) - Jared Odrick, DT, Penn State - The Broncos picked up this pick by trading away Brandon Marshall and are pleased to get a talented DT like Odrick. They will count on him to be the anchor of their 3-4 defense for years to come.
26. Arizona - Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland - The Cardinals are transitioning to more of a run-heavy offense, featuring Beanie Wells and Tim Hightower. Campbell will help the run game, and keep the heat off of QB Matt Leinart.
27. Dallas - Sean Weatherspoon, OLB, Missouri - The Cowboys were impressed by Weatherspoon’s performance at the Senior Bowl, and get an injection of youth with veteran Keith Brooking nearing the end of his career.
28. San Diego - Brian Price, DT, UCLA - The Chargers filled their need at running back by trading away a couple of mid-round picks for Marshawn Lynch. They would have preferred a bigger DT like Odrick, but saw him selected just a few picks earlier by their division rival - the Denver Broncos. Price has good functional strength, and will learn behind Jamal Williams.
29. New York Jets - Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida State - Rex Ryan is looking for an upgrade opposite Darrell Revis, and gets that by drafting Robinson. Many fans wanted a wide receiver here, but the Jets know they can fill that need in the upcoming rounds.
30. Minnesota - Dominique Franks, CB, Oklahoma - Antoine Winfield is the Vikings only consistent corner, and injuries are catching up with the 32-year old. Franks has great athleticism, and should be starting soon in his rookie year.
31. Indianapolis - Brandon Graham, DE/OLB, Michigan - The Colts need to add more pass rushers, and were impressed by Graham’s dominant performance at the Senior Bowl.
32. New Orleans - Sergio Kindle, DE, Texas - The Saints could go a number of different ways with this pick, but decide to draft an athletic playmaker like Kindle.
