What If?!? Monday Mock Draft 2/22/2010

by Cecil Lammey on 02/22/10

What if the Rams traded down with the Bucs?  What if six Defensive Ends were drafted in the first-round?  Check back every Monday leading up to the draft for my new “What If!?!” mock draft!

1. Tampa Bay (from StL for Josh Johnson, #3 overall and third-rounder in 2010) - Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska - The Bucs feel like they got a steal by trading away a backup QB and a third-rounder to move up two positions in the draft.

2. Detroit - Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma - The Lions are happy to get McCoy here, and head coach Jim Schwartz will make him into his new Albert Haynesworth.

3. St. Louis (from Tampa Bay) - Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State - The Rams feel they can get by with Josh Johnson (and may look to add Michael Vick later) so they decide to add more weapons to the offense.  Many in the scouting community feel that Bryant is the second coming of Larry Fitzgerald.

4. Washington - Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame - Mike Shanahan wants a young QB to groom, and Clausen gets the nod over Sam Bradford.  Clausen moves around well in the pocket, and reminds Shanahan of his former QB Jay Cutler.

5. Kansas City - Eric Berry, CB/FS, Tennessee - The Chiefs have many holes to fill, and grab Berry here because of his versatility.  He’ll be an instant upgrade to their secondary, and help out as a return man.

6. Seattle - Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State - Pete Carroll was hoping Dez Bryant would fall to them here, but is happy to get the best offensive tackle in this draft class.  Okung should start immediately and help protect Matt Hasselbeck’s backside.

7. Cleveland - Joe Haden, CB, Florida - The Browns could have gone in a number of different directions here, but Mike Holmgren knows they need help in the secondary.

8. Oakland - Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida - Al Davis loves athletic playmakers, and Pierre-Paul will impress his staff more than any other defensive end at the combine.

9. Buffalo - Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers - The Bills were “this” close to selecting QB Sam Bradford here, but know that whoever their quarterback is will need better protection.  Davis will help upgrade one of the weakest offensive lines in the league.

10. Denver (from Chicago) - Rolando McClain, ILB, Alabama - The Broncos need more attitude on defense, and McClain will give them just that.  His aggressive style will help stuff the run, and inspire the defense to play tougher.

11. Jacksonville - Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma - The Jags never expected one of the two best quarterbacks to fall this far in the draft.  Bradford should compete with incumbent David Garrard right away and may even beat him out for the starting job.

12. Dolphins - Everson Griffen, DE, USC - The Dolphins have one need above all others in this draft, and that’s help for the pass rush.  Griffen fits the bill, and they’ll look to add a wideout in the second-round.

13. San Francisco - Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma - Williams is the best run blocking tackle in this draft class, and will help Frank Gore become an even bigger force in 2010.

14. Seattle (from Denver) - Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa - Having already picked up Okung earlier in the draft some are shocked the Seahawks would grab another offensive lineman with this pick.  Bulaga and Okung will not only protect Hasselbeck better, but they will open up bigger holes for the run game.

15. New York Giants - Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida - Antonio Pierce is gone, and the Giants need an injection of youth at the position.  Spikes will learn to be more disciplined working on this savvy/veteran defense.

16. San Francisco (from Carolina) - Earl Thomas, FS, Texas - The 49ers were not impressed with Taylor Mays, so decide to get Thomas with this pick.  He’s not the biggest Free Safety, but can turn and cover with the best of them.

17. Tennessee - Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida - Dunlap will get to be Jeff Fisher’s new version of Jevon Kearse.  The former Gator has big shoes to fill, but the team feels he’s up to it.

18. Pittsburgh - C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson - The Steelers shock the NFL by drafting Spiller here, but it makes sense.  They are likely to part ways with Willie Parker and are looking for a replacement.  Spiller adds another dimension to their offense, and will make a great complementary back to Rashard Mendenhall.

19. Atlanta - Brandon Graham, DE, Michigan - Former number eight overall pick Jamaal Anderson has not lived up to his potential.  The Falcons need to add a consistent force opposite sack-master John Abraham.  Graham’s draft stock has been on the rise since his standout performance at the Senior Bowl.

20. Houston - Dominique Franks, CB, Oklahoma - The Texans and Dunta Robinson should part ways this year, and the secondary is their biggest team need.

21. Cincinnati - Taylor Mays, FS, USC - Mays has been compared to Roy Williams, and defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer knows exactly how to make the most of a player like that.

22. New England - Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech - The Patriots traded Richard Seymour away last year, and their pass rush never recovered.  Morgan will immediately help as a situational pass rusher.

23. Green Bay - Mike Iupati, OG/OT, Idaho - The Packers are thankful to have the versatile Iupati fall to them here.  He can help all across the offensive line, and adds depth at more than one position.

24. Philadelphia - Sergio Kindle, OLB, Texas - Kindle has the explosiveness to get to the quarterback from the edge, but has enough pop at the point of attack to bull rush effectively.

25. Baltimore - Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida State - The Ravens were looking for a big wide receiver here, but feel they can find one in the mid rounds.  Robinson will work into their secondary as a nickel back this year, and could develop into a solid starter in only a couple of years.

26. Arizona - Ricky Sapp, OLB, Clemson - Sapp has great closing burst and can get to the quarterback in a hurry.  If engaged with a bigger lineman he can use his long arms to reach up and knock down passes at the line of scrimmage.

27. Dallas - Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland - Campbell is a natural tackle that hasn’t reached his full potential.  He arguably has the highest upside of any offensive tackle in the 2010 NFL Draft Class.

28. San Diego - Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno State - LaDanian Tomlinson is gone, and the Chargers are left with a big hole at the running back position.  They consider Jonathan Dwyer here, but decide that Mathews is a more versatile runner that can help out as a receiver out of the backfield.

29. New York Jets - Damian Williams, WR, USC - The Jets were hoping Campbell would fall a couple of more spots, but are happy to get a wide receiver here.  Williams does a nice job of setting up defenders in his routes, and will team up with former college teammate QB Mark Sanchez for instant chemistry on the field.

30. Minnesota - Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State - Antoine Winfield is the Vikings only consistent corner, and injuries are catching up with the 32-year old.  Wilson can turn and play coverage, and is physical enough to play near the line of scrimmage.

31. Indianapolis - Sean Weatherspoon, OLB, Missouri - Weatherspoon has a quick initial burst and has a nose for the football.  He will attack the football, and can help the Colts defense create more turnovers.

32. New Orleans - Corey Wootton, DE, Northwestern - Wootton is very tall, and knows how to use his frame to disrupt passing lanes.  He can play with power, and is recovering his speed after a knee injury in the 2008 Alamo Bowl.
