What If?!? Monday Mock Draft 3/1/2010

by Cecil Lammey on 03/01/10

What if the Browns trade up for Sam Bradford?  What if four Running Backs were drafted in the first-round?  Check back every Monday leading up to the draft for my new “What If!?!” mock draft!

1. Cleveland (from St. Louis for Brady Quinn and Corey Williams, plus #7 overall and a second-round pick in 2011) - Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma -  Mike Holmgren loves accurate quarterbacks, and Bradford is hyper-accurate.  He checks out medically and the Brady Quinn era is promptly brought to a halt in Cleveland.

2. Detroit - Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma - Jim Schwartz has a dream come true when he gets to choose between McCoy and Suh.  He decides to go with McCoy because of the perceived higher upside, and McCoy’s suddenness as a pass rusher.

3. Tampa Bay - Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska - The Bucs get a gift as they just sit back and have the safest player in the draft fall into their laps.

4. Washington - Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State - Chris Samuels has retired, and Sam Bradford was selected just a few picks earlier.  Coach Shanahan decides to stick with Jason Campbell, and give him better protection up front.

5. Kansas City - Joe Haden, CB, Florida - Haden is arguably the most explosive player in this entire draft class, and the Chiefs love adding a true shut-down corner to their team.

6. Seattle - Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame - The Seahawks have many needs, but decide to go with a quarterback.  Once the Redskins pass on Clausen new Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll grabs him with their first of two first-round picks.  Seahawks fans are hoping he’s not another Rick Mirer.

7. St. Louis (from Cleveland) - Ricky Sapp, OLB, Clemson -  The Rams added Brady Quinn to compete for the starting job, plus Corey Williams gives them more depth on the defensive line.  Sapp is considered to be the best OLB in the draft, and St. Louis needs an upgrade from David Vobora, Larry Grant, and Paris Lenon.

8. Oakland - Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland - Campbell had an impressive showing at the Scouting Combine and Al Davis doesn’t hesitate to add him to the Raiders roster.

9. Buffalo - Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers - The Bills would have considered a quarterback if one of the top two had been available, and they even discuss selecting Dez Bryant here.  In the end they know an improved offensive line is a must.

10. Jacksonville - Eric Berry, CB/FS, Tennessee - The Jags are extremely happy to have what many considered a top 5 pick fall to them at number 10.  Berry will immediately be an upgrade over Reggie Nelson, plus help out with the return game.

11. Denver (from Chicago) - Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee - The Broncos need a tough anchor for their defense, and loved what they saw from Williams at the Senior Bowl and the Scouting Combine.

12. Dolphins - Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida - Joey Porter is gone and Jason Taylor is no spring chicken.  Bill Parcells knows he can ensure Pierre-Paul is more than a one-year wonder.

13. San Francisco - C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson - The 49ers make some noise with this pick because they already have Pro Bowl RB Frank Gore.  Coach Singletary believes Spiller will be more of a Felix Jones-type playmaker, and not Chris Johnson 2.0.

14. Seattle (from Denver) - Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State - The Seahawks have a big need on the offensive line, but feel they can draft one in the second-round.  Dez Bryant is immediately the best wide receiver on the team, and Pete Carroll is hopeful he will develop great chemistry with rookie QB Jimmy Clausen.

15. New York Giants - Rolando McClain, ILB, Alabama - The Giants are very pleased to have a player like McClain fall to them at this spot.  Some in the scouting community believe that McClain could be the next Ray Lewis.

16. Tennessee - Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida - Jeff Fisher needs more from his pass rush, and Titans fans are hoping that Dunlap can develop like former Gator (and Titans) great Jevon Kearse.

17. San Francisco (from Carolina) - Taylor Mays, FS, USC - The 49ers second first-round pick draws some criticism from around the league.  Mays didn’t impress at the Senior Bowl or the Scouting Combine, but Coach Singletary knows how to handle a player like Mays and believes his attitude will help energize the defense.

18. Pittsburgh - Earl Thomas, FS, Texas - Ryan Clark was allowed to test free agency, so Pittsburgh gets a perfect fit when Thomas is available at this spot.  Thomas is very fluid in coverage and will immediately help their pass defense.

19. Atlanta - Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State - The Falcons have a big need in their secondary and decide to go with the brash Kyle Wilson here.  Wilson is great in press coverage, has a smooth drop and can stay with most receivers all through the route.

20. Houston - Dominique Franks, CB, Oklahoma - The Texans have parted ways with Dunta Robinson and consider many available Cornerbacks at this spot.  They decide to go with Franks because of his explosive first step and nose for the ball.

21. Cincinnati - Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame - Marvin Lewis doesn’t get caught up in Scouting Combine performances like other coaches around the league, but he couldn’t help but fall head over heels for Golden Tate.  This move will help Chad Ochocinco get more single coverage and adds another weapon for Carson Palmer to look for.

22. New England - Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma - The Patriots know that Tom Brady needs more weapons around him, and they love what Gresham can do in the passing game.  He should be a good replacement for Ben Watson, who is likely to leave through free agency.

23. Green Bay - Mike Iupati, OG/OT, Idaho - Green Bay needs help on the offensive line, and love Iupati’s versatility.  They can line him up at Guard or Tackle, and will move him around to find the best fit.

24. Philadelphia - Jonathan Dwyer, RB, Georgia Tech - The Eagles lost out to San Diego for the services of veteran Chester Taylor, so they decide to go with Dwyer here.  He is a huge back with a good size/speed ratio.  LeSean McCoy can’t carry the entire load, plus Dwyer is a good receiver out of the backfield.

25. Baltimore - Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida State - The Ravens were looking for a big wide receiver here, but feel they can find one in the mid rounds.  Robinson will work into their secondary as a nickel back this year, and could develop into a solid starter in only a couple of years.

26. Arizona - Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma - The Cardinals are going to be a more run heavy offense now that Matt Leinart is the starting quarterback.  Williams is considered to be the best run blocking tackle in this draft class.

27. Dallas - Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech - You can never have too many pass rushers, and the Cowboys are thrilled to have Morgan on their team.  With arguably the best physical skill set of any pass rusher in this draft class Morgan is very aggressive when attacking the quarterback.

28. San Diego - Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa - The Chargers feel they solved their RB dilemma when they added veteran Chester Taylor.  Selecting a Defensive Tackle is an option here, but the Chargers can’t pass on adding a talented OT like Bulaga.

29. New York Jets - Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno State - The Jets let Thomas Jones walk, but know they need more RB depth - especially if Leon Washington can’t come back from his injury.  Shonn Greene will be the hammer, but Mathews will work to give them fresh legs as they hope to make another playoff push.

30. Minnesota - Jahvid Best, RB, California - The Vikings surprise the NFL with this pick.  They lost Chester Taylor through free agency, but love the explosive playmaking ability of Best.  He will team with Adrian Peterson to give the Vikings a potent 1-2 punch.

31. Indianapolis - Jared Ordrick, DT, Penn State - The Colts want more beef on their defensive line, and Odrick will fit perfectly.  His big body will help stuff the run and keep offensive linemen from reaching the second level of their defense.

32. New Orleans - Brandon Graham, DE, Michigan - The World Champion Saints want more pressure from their defense, and Graham can play DE or OLB.  A great showing at the Senior Bowl is followed up by another solid performance at his pro day.
