What If?!? Monday Mock Draft 3/8/2010

by Cecil Lammey on 03/08/10

What if Dez Bryant falls down the draft board because of character concerns?  What if four Quarterbacks were drafted in the first-round?  Check back every Monday leading up to the draft for my new “What If!?!” mock draft!

1. St. Louis - Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma - The Rams have a ton of needs, but perhaps the most glaring is at quarterback.  Bradford checks out medically, and the Rams get the franchise quarterback they’ve been searching for.

2. Detroit - Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska - The Lions have been very active in free agency, adding DL Corey Williams via trade.  Suh is more versatile than McCoy and makes a ton of sense with this pick.

3. Tampa Bay - Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma - Tampa Bay must choose between FS Eric Berry and McCoy, and they decide to go with the big Defensive Lineman.  McCoy and Roy Miller should give the Bucs a strong front line.

4. Washington - Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame - Mike Shanahan will keep Jason Campbell around while he grooms his replacement in Jimmy Clausen.  Shanny sees him as another Jay Cutler, and will ease him into the lineup towards the end of the year.

5. Kansas City - Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State - Fan boys have been trying to figure out how to re-unite Charlie Weis and Jimmy Clausen with this pick, but it just won’t happen.  The Chiefs have too much invested in QB Matt Cassel, and they must protect him better if they want to get the most out of him.

6. Seattle - Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland - The Seahawks have many needs, but perhaps none is more important than adding quality players to the offensive line.  Campbell had a great performance at the Scouting Combine, and should be a mainstay on the line for years to come.

7. Cleveland - Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State - Having added OT Tony Pashos the Browns don’t feel the need to address their offensive line here.  Joe Haden was their top target, but they decide to go with Wilson instead because of his performance at the combine.

8. Oakland - Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa - Many people expect the Raiders to take Rutgers OT Anthony Davis here, but Al Davis is always full of surprises.  Bulaga is very versatile and capable of playing up to four spots on the offensive line.

9. Buffalo - Tim Tebow, QB, Florida - The absolute shock of the draft happens here when Buffalo selects Tebow with a top 10 pick.  Chan Gailey has worked with athletic QBs before (Kordell Stewart, Tyler Thigpen) and knows that Tebow will take time to develop.  In the meantime, Trent Edwards will be the starter while Tebow develops and the team adds more weapons around him.

10. Jacksonville - Eric Berry, CB/FS, Tennessee - The Jags are privately upset in losing out on Tim Tebow, but feel good about Eric Berry falling to this spot.  Berry will immediately be an upgrade over Reggie Nelson, plus help out with the return game.

11. Denver (from Chicago) - Sean Weatherspoon, OLB, Missouri - The Broncos consider drafting Dez Bryant here, but with Brandon Marshall sticking around they decide to go in a different direction.  Weatherspoon followed up a solid performance at the Scouting Combine with an even better showing at his pro day.  He will push Robert Ayers for the starting job opposite Elvis Dumervil.

12. Dolphins - Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee - The Dolphins have been adding players like LB Karlos Dansby through free agency, so they look to DT Dan Williams here.  A torn quadriceps muscle sent aging veteran Jason Ferguson to IR, and he’s a free agent in 2010 who may not be back with the team.  Ferguson has also been suspended for the first eight games of the season for breaking the NFL’s drug policy.

13. San Francisco - C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson - The 49ers make some noise with this pick because they already have Pro Bowl RB Frank Gore.  Coach Singletary believes Spiller will be more of a Felix Jones-type playmaker, and not Chris Johnson 2.0.

14. Seattle (from Denver) - Colt McCoy, QB, Texas - Another shocking QB move here, as Pete Carroll decides to get the Texas gunslinger in the middle of the first-round when many thought he would last until the second.  McCoy will develop as the backup behind Matt Hasselbeck now that Seneca Wallace has been traded to the Browns.

15. New York Giants - Rolando McClain, ILB, Alabama - The Giants are very pleased to have a player like McClain fall to them at this spot.  Some in the scouting community believe that McClain could be the next Ray Lewis.

16. Tennessee - Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida - Kyle Vanden Bosch re-joined former Titans defensive coordinator (and current Lions head coach) Jim Schwartz so the Titans have a big need to fill.  Jeff Fisher is thrilled to have the player some believe to be the best DE in this draft class fall to them here.  Pierre-Paul reminds some in the scouting community of Titans great Jevon Kearse, and the youngster could be a double-digit sack artist in his first season.

17. San Francisco (from Carolina) - Sergio Kindle, OLB, Texas - The 49ers needed to upgrade from Manny Lawson and Parys Haralson - drafting Kindle does just that.  Considered by some to be the best OLB prospect this year, Kindle is a strong/fast hybrid linebacker with good size.

18. Pittsburgh - Maurkice Pouncey, C, Florida - The Steelers re-signed Ryan Clark so they pass on taking a Safety with this pick.  Pouncey, a four-year starter at Florida, has plenty of game experience and will be the centerpiece of the Steelers O-Line for years to come.

19. Atlanta - Joe Haden, CB, Florida - The Falcons may have added Dunta Robinson, but they traded away Chris Houston to the Lions.  Haden’s poor performance at the Scouting Combine makes him fall out of the top 10, but you won’t hear the Falcons complain.

20. Houston - Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno State - The Texans were chomping at the bit to get this card in when Mathews was available at this spot.  Steve Slaton may not be the same back after his injury, and the team knows they need a strong running attack.  Mathews is a strong runner between the tackles who only gets stronger as the game goes on.  He is very decisive and is willing to pound out tough yards in the middle of the defense.

21. Cincinnati - Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida - The Bengals needed another big time wide receiver, but choose to pass on Dez Bryant.  Spikes plays with a high motor and will bring good energy and aggression to the defense.

22. New England - Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State - Somehow, someway, the Patriots have the best WR in the draft fall all the way to them.  Bill Belichick is grinning from ear to ear because Bryant will get to learn the ropes from Randy Moss, and will be a valuable player this season - especially if Wes Welker is slow to recover.

23. Green Bay - Mike Iupati, OG/OT, Idaho - Green Bay needs help on the offensive line, and love Iupati’s versatility.  They can line him up at Guard or Tackle, and will move him around to find the best fit.

24. Philadelphia - Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida - The Eagles made a run at Julius Peppers, but may be happier with the younger Dunlap.  Philly blitzes more than most teams in the NFL, and with Trent Cole getting double-teamed it will open up better pass rush opportunities for the rookie.

25. Baltimore - Taylor Mays, FS, USC - Ed Reed is nearing the end of his career, and the Ravens find his perfect protege.  Mays has an aggressive attitude that fits exactly what the Ravens want in their free safety.

26. Arizona - Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers - Davis didn’t expect to fall this far, but the Cards are happy he did.  Davis will need to keep his weight under control, but has the brute strength to be a nasty force in the trenches.

27. Dallas - Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech - You can never have too many pass rushers, and the Cowboys are thrilled to have Morgan on their team.  With arguably the best physical skill set of any pass rusher in this draft class Morgan is very aggressive when attacking the quarterback and can defend the run.

28. San Diego - Toby Gerhart, RB, Stanford - The Chargers want Gerhart to be the thunder to Darren Sproles lightning.  A.J. Smith loves Gerhart’s football intelligence, power, and nimble feet when running between the tackles.

29. New York Jets - Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma - The addition of CB Antonio Cromartie means the Jets can look at another position in the first-round.  The Jets are the best running team in football, and Williams is considered to be the best run blocking tackle in the draft.

30. Minnesota - Earl Thomas, FS, Texas - The Vikings should remain a base zone defense, so getting a Free Safety like Thomas who can cover is a must.  He’s an instinctive player that can diagnose what the offense is trying to do very quickly.

31. Indianapolis - Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida State - The Colts did not tender offers to restricted free agent CBs Tim Jennings and Marlin Jackson, so Cornerback becomes their biggest need here.  Robinson is a high risk/high reward pick.  His athletic ability is off the charts, but some scouts question whether or not he has the desire to be truly great.

32. New Orleans - Brandon Graham, DE, Michigan - The World Champion Saints want more pressure from their defense, and Graham can play DE or OLB.  A great showing at the Senior Bowl cements his spot in the first-round.
